A Letter from A Prostitute

A Letter from A Prostitute

Dear Laura,
I don't know why I'm writing this letter to you, well… may be because I see you as a matured and understanding babe, I know you might like to publish the story but I don't mind, the whole world can know, I'm way past beyond that, my name is Mary, its not my real name but that's the name everybody knows me by. By everybody, I mean my clients and fellow prostitutes. I won't tell you which part of Nigeria I come from, suffice it to say , I'm a very beautiful lady, I'm tall and well proportioned, you may wonder why I have all this qualities and yet I'm in this game.
You see, I'm not ashamed of my profession, it's the oldest in the world and anyway it pays my bills and of course I can raise my nose at others, I don't sleep with myself, do I? If the men didn't patronize me, there will be no business, so I want to thank all the Nigerians out here for patronising prostitutes if not we will die of hunger and poverty.
Apart from this, I know I'm just like thousands of girls who pretend that they are better than me, those girls work in offices or do business. As far as I am concerned, any woman who gives her body in exchange for money, contracts, favour whether tangible or intangible is also a prostitute, so Nigerians should stop the pretence. They should all shut up their lousy shallow mouths, I don't mean to be rude but I must say this things piss me off and I'm writing this letter to air the views of most prostitutes. The other week, I slept with three governors whose names I won't mention. I don't want to spoil my business. These men enjoys threesomes, I mean four or three girls servicing them at once. They are just mad…mad…mad.
Well, poverty is one of the reasons I do these things, my father is in jail somewhere in Togo for fraud, I don't even know who my mother is ,life for me  has been living with one uncle or aunt, who either treats me like a house help or frustrates me. I lost my virginity quite early. My neighbour, who was the managing director of a thriving bank, enticed me and slept with me, after the act, he gave me five thousand naira. I saved the money, it was quite huge money as far as I was concerned, but my life seems to be trailed with a long list of ill luck. I lost the money to robbers when I went to the bank to get it to register for my WAEC exams.
Frustrations, too many to recount here led me to this way of life. After my secondary school, I made friends with one lady living down my street, she was really nice to me and wanted to help me and she introduced me to men who slept with me and gave me money in return. With theses monies, I saved and moved into a shanty somewhere in Agege. The shanty had twelve tenants with no latrine. But I was determined to live above such an existence if I wad to survive as a prostitute I had to live big. I started going to one star hotel to look for clients, soon I was able to get an apartment in Opebi and a Honda car. In between I sold hard drugs to who ever was interested. There is big money in hard drugs; my brush with NDLEA put an end to that business because I almost went to jail.
I think I have said my piece and I pray this will influence the attitude of most Nigerians towards us. We are just ordinary babes making a living, if you don't like it, do something about it instead of empty criticisms that does nobody any good. I have to survive and survive I will.

Yours Sincerely,
 Mary
