Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Influence On Ogun State

Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Influence On Ogun State

By IKE EGWUATU

The norm of engaging in monthly environmental sanitation in Nigeria was introduced by the Buhari / Idiagbon military administration and ever since the scrapping of the program  at national level,  Lagos state has retained this noble gesture to ensure a clean and healthy  environment being the nation’s economic capital city with high population of migrants that throng the city daily.
Ogun State shares boundaries with Lagos State and some towns at the periphery of both states are hosts to the spillover of the huge population of citizens who either came to explore opportunities or work in Lagos state.
Hence, Lagos norms and lifestyles have great influence on these people. One of such is the aforesaid monthly environmental sanitation. Metro Beats took time to monitor these boarder towns during the last environmental sanitation and confirmed that residents of these towns even though they are within the jurisdiction of Ogun State still observe the environmental sanitation and keep to the laws guiding the exercise.
Restriction of movement, non opening of business premises, unblocking drainages, clearing of weed, sweeping and removal of filthy or unsafe properties. “The essence of cleanliness cannot be overemphasized” stated a resident of Denro, who spoke to Metro Beats. Segun , a landlord in the area believes that even if he is not in Lagos, he will still be observing the environmental sanitation with his family and tenants.
A resident of Alagbole, Mr. Igwe Kingsley, attributed to the compliance to restriction of movement to the fact that most residents of Alagbole have their businesses and working places situated in Lagos. An observation  countered Mr. Igwe’s  statement as most shops and business premises situated in Alagbole, Ojodu Abiodun ,Oluwakemi, Ishasi, Olambe and Agbado were all locked up. Cars were packed and streets deserted .
