Twenty-six year old Nigerian born Olanrewaju Apalara has been sentenced
to 18months imprisonment by a southmark crown court, Dangenham, Essex,
United Kingdom over a 170,000 pounds (N37.4million credit card scam.
Apalara was jailed after pleading guilty to obtaining property by deception and converting the proceeds of criminal property.
Apalara, sales assistant at a London lewis store in London, was caught
after he spent nearly 1,000 belonging to a TV presenter, Des O'Connor.
The Nigerian used his mobile phone to record the veteran star's card
details and those of dozens of other customers who are regular callers
at the John Lewis' fledging Oxford Street store in London.
The former IT student was caught when John Lewis' fraud department was alerted to a high number of “unusual transactions”.
Apalara used two internet shopping sites where he knew the 'integrity
of the card verification system was flawed, the prosecution alleged.
The prosecution also told the court that Apalara bought 170,000 pounds
worth of goods with various stolen credit card over a period of nine
months.
His purchases were delivered to friends and relatives all over London and he would visit them to pick the goods.
The nine-month crime spree ended when John Lewis called in the police.
