A devastated father told how his fit and healthy 23-year-old daughter
died just 48 hours after being admitted to hospital with a headache.
Travel consultant Kathy Kurtanjek was taken to hospital by her parents
believing she was suffering from a bad headache but doctors transferred
her to a specialist brain unit.
Emergency surgery was carried out on a burst cyst in her brain, but she
died shortly afterwards, devastating her family and friends as they
prepare to attend her funeral service today.
Her father, Michael Kurtanjek, said because she had recently signed the
organ donor register, Kathy will go on to help 20 other seriously ill
people.
Mr. Kurtanjek, from Copthorne, near Crawley, West Sussex, said: "It was the most tragic 48 hours.
We are all devastated. It is even more of a terrible tragedy because Kathy was only 23, and due to turn 24 on October 23.
"Like everybody, we all get headaches but this was a lot more serious
than we would ever have imagined. Despite the very valiant efforts of
the doctors, she went into a coma and never recovered."
Kathy, who had graduated from the University of Hull with a 2:1 honours
degree in psychology and sociology, was taken ill on August 20 and went
to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, Surrey.
She was then transferred to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south-west
London, in an ambulance with a police escort. Surgeons performed an
emergency operation after finding a cyst causing fluid on the brain,
but she died on August 22.
