When I Was Growing Up, I Thought It Was Only Guys That Enjoy Sex -Oby Gold Edozieh

Oby Gold Edozieh is one of the very few talented Nollywood actresses who combine bluntness, boldness, brain and beauty to remain a pick among the packs in the Nigerian movie industry.
The sweet, sexy and sassy star actress who was born in Anambra State has arguably left her footprint in the movie scene with her captivating roles in various home videos. Oby is number three from the family of six (4 girls and 2 boys).
In this exclusive interview with KAZEEM POPOOLA, the Lagos State University graduate in her cossy apartment in Surulere, Lagos State, opens up on her new found love, career plus other burning issues.

Your yet to be released movie and most especially the soundtrack have generated a lot of noise. What is it all about?
The movie is titled "Show Stopper". I wrote the script and as well produced it. Basically the soundtrack is already on air but the movie would be released very soon, probably much later this year but not now.
Is that your own first production?
No, it's my second production. My first film was called "Pals". I sold it to A-Z, a renown marketer, who now cuts it into two and makes Part one and two of each, which is re-named "The Earth" and the "Unbreakable love" consecutively.
Definitely that might have fetched you a whole lot of money...
No! I lost lots of money from my capital. That's why I am really taking my time on this new one "Show Stopper", you can see that the soundtrack is already on air and I am currently doing one or  two things to get some money before releasing it.
It is quite Obvious that you are joining the bandwagon of Nigerian actresses-turned singers with your debut soundtrack...
(laughs) No, mine is different because it's just a soundtrack from a movie.
Not that you are jumping acting for music?
Never! I can't do that, even if I am old and shaky, I would still be acting because there is always a role for an old woman.
That song was dedicated to your late father?
Yeah! When my father was alive, he was everything to me. He died in the year 1999.
Was he anyway connected to the storyline of your forth-coming movie?
Yes! In the movie, there are three girls from different backgrounds but having the same dream. At the end of the day, they went through thick and thin to become musical stars in the movie. And when they become stars, the stardom thing gets into their head, two of them later get involved in a plane crash and they die.
My character in the movie was "Delina", the remaining of the three girls, Oritz Williki played the role of a music producer and he shut down the music studio because of the death of the two girls and other band members. I was devastated because of that but later got hold of myself. I later went to him (Oritz Williki) but he told me that he wasn't interested in music anymore, and I now went to another music producer. The first music I produced in the movie was dedicated to the other two girls and the band members who died in the plane crash. Aside the movie thing, the film and soundtrack is dedicated to all those who have lost their loved ones whether through a plane crash or other means. If you listen to the lyrics, it's for the dead, it's something one could listen to and shed tears.
Are you now saying that your father died in a plane crash?
No! He did not. The title of the song is I wish I could bring him back. The song is for the dead not necessarily for those who died in the plane crash.
Your father might have played a significant role in your life...
Oh! (screams) My God, he was my life and my everything. At times I cried to God if I could say thank you to Him for everything. For example when I was in the university where girls shared only one room, my father furnished q whole room for me alone and I had everything. At first, people thought my father was my sugar-daddy. He would come to my lecture room, go through my textbooks and ask me questions. He was my friend and everything. My first sanitary towel (menstrual pad) was bought by my father. Despite the fact that I am not the last born, we were so close, he calls me to eat his leftover food.
What about your mother?
She is wonderful and cool, but it's just that I am closer to my dad.
And she was not jealous when your father was alive that probably you wanted to snatch her husband?
No! Which husband? He's my dad, I used to remove grey hair from his head and beard.
Apart from your acting prowess, you are recently at the centre of controversies. How would you defend that?
It's not really a big deal, it is just that somebody is trying to make a big deal out of nothing.
So how are you coping with all the negative stories branded about town?
At times, when I am in the car, the next thing you see is my pictures and other funny headlines. Sometimes those stories could be nice and terrible, at first, I don't feel like talking but when it gets too much, I tell myself to correct those things in other to let people know my own side of the story. And I think I've done it, I've moved on with my life and I don't want to discuss it anymore. I decided not to reply, no matter what anybody says in the papers.
For two friends to be fighting over one guy, that means he must be very sweet.
We never fought over any guy (repeats) and I can never fight over any guy.
Apart from the recent scandal, any other one from the past?
I am too focused, and I don't think I have any scandal whatsoever.
Probably the guy in question possessed the true picture of your dream man?
He is not!
So what is the true picture of your dream man?
The picture of my dream man is the one you are seeing right there (pointing to stoutly-built dark-complexioned handsome dude standing next to her). I have gotten a man far better than any other man. I don't know why I am talking about him because I don't really want to talk about any man, but Kazeem you are making me to talk about it. I have gotten something that I am contended with, you can see that I am at home even if he is not here.
Can you let us into his name?
(laughs) No! Please.
How do you meet?
I remember he once wanted to see me, I actually went to his place for something that did not work out, he later called me to encourage me about my job and other things. He wanted to see me but due to our different tight schedules, it was not easy and it was over one month or two before we eventually saw each other and talked since then it's been cool.
Are you now saying that you've found a true love?
I don't want to talk about any man until that final day when I have my wedding ring. But I have found somebody I am really in love with.
Once beaten twice shy. Probably you've been heartbroken several times?
Of course! Every girl has been heartbroken, which girl will tell you that she hasn't had her heart broken before. Heartbroken in the sense that, when I see that something is not working, I will try to make it work, as they usually say that women should be patient, but when it's not working you move on, even thoug you may be hurt in the process.
Hope you are not making another mistake?
(laughs) I am not.
So when are you getting married?
When God says that I would. Don't worry, you will get the invitation card when it's ready.
Can you recollect one of the sweetest things he ever told you?
He said that he cannot choose another woman over me, can't I see that I am beautiful, have the height, got all what it takes and how on earth would I think he would ever choose another woman over me?
Hope it's not the same person that set-off the controversy between you and Tricia?
No! the controversy was five years ago.
Why is it blowing-up now?
Ask the person involved, please don't let us go into that.
Which one among your numerous films gave you the name in the Nigeria movie industry?
I think it was Abuja connection.
You always play the role of a bad girl...
They always give me that role, but there are few movies in which I played a different role. It's just that I had more of bad girl roles.
And that does not portray the real Oby Edozieh?
I can never be like that because that is a make-belief world. The real Oby is very blunt, loving, romantic though I could be very nice and naughty at times.
What is your own definition of sex?
I refuse to talk about sex because anytime I do, they always make headline with it. But to be frank, when I was growing up I thought it was only guys that enjoyed sex but I come to realize that we both need it. It is very necessary in any relationship, it makes life go on. At times, when you are tensed, I think you need it to calm down (laughs).
With your own definition of sex, hope you did not lose your virginity very early?
I lost my virginity very late, (repeat). I was still a virgin up till my university days. I am always proud of that.
Did you actually give it to the first man that broke your heart?
(laughs) Kazeem you are sick! Please I don't want to talk about it. The most important thing is the man in my life right now.
How is your relationship with God?
He is my number one, without him I won't be alive. I used to ask myself if I am better than other people, even when I am broke, sad and when everything seems not right in my life, I always thank God that I am alive, because when there is life there is hope.
Can you recollect vividly your worst moment?
That was when I lost my dad, I almost lost my head. When I heard the news, I remembered that I found myself in Yaba from Surulere, very late in the night.
How did you regain your sanity?
I don't know, I got back into the house around 12a.m.; people in my house were like, where have I been all day? I did not answer them, I just went straight into my room, had my bath and slept off. I later woke up in the middle of the night shouting and screaming. That was when it got to me that truly I had lost my father.
What makes you tick in the Nigeria movie industry?
God! I always put everything in His hand.
Apart from acting and singing, what are the other sides of Oby?
(laughs) I can be crazy at times, I can do some wild things. But to be sincere, I could be a good pastor, because I can preach and read the bible very well.
What really swept you off your feet about your new found love?
(laughs) He is really handsome, educated and, may be because he's here, I am really short of words.
You stood him up for almost two months. What maked you accept his proposal finally?
I think I was less busy. And the first time I saw him, I was like Whao. This guy is cool, it is not just being cool, what matters most is the inside of a man. And for me to adapt, that means I really love him.
Though you don't want to talk about Tricia, what about a possible make-up or reconciliation in the future?
I leave that to God.
How do you unwind?
I could be home, go to the cinema and at times I usually have my guy around to unwind together with.
What about fashion?
I dress well, I dress according to occasion but I am a jeans girl.
It seems you always like to show off your nicely structured body?
They say when you have it, you flaunt it. I flaunt what I have without sending anybody... (Laughs).
Lastly, you've been shuttling between Abuja, Port Harcourt and Lagos. what are you up to?
I have some projects which I am doing, at times if you talk about plans, it doesn't turn out well. Let me just do my things secretly, and they say good things don't hide. When it's time I will flaunt everything including my man.
