Lagos Govt Saves N800 Million Through PIIP InitiativeLagos Govt Saves N800 Million Through PIIP InitiativeStories By RAJI ADEBAYO
Lagos State Government has accumulated corresponding saving of over N800 million and rehabilitation of about 15km length of single carriage way road through Public Infrastructure Improvement Partnership Programme (PIIP) initiative. This initiative of the state government through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is an option to revolutionize the deplorable condition of infrastructure in the state. The initiative entails the constructive engagement of socially responsible private sector and eminent philanthropic individuals in the improvement of the public infrastructures. This is to enable the state government cope sufficiently with the demands of the public and meet the expected targets necessary for an improved infrastructure delivery for a cosmopolitan state like Lagos. This was recently disclosed to National Mirror by the Special Adviser on Works and infrastructure, Engineer Ganiyu Johnson while explaining the efforts of the state government towards infrastructural development in the state as parts of the dividend of democracy to the people of the state. He explained that the involvement of all the stakeholders became necessary in order to jointly strategize and implement policy framework. “In effect, the PIIP initiative seeks to appeal to the sense of the social responsibility of the private community towards giving back to the environment in which they operate. Under the programme a socially responsible organization has the opportunity of sponsoring any improvement scheme that suits its budget”, he stated. Furthermore, in a bid to ensure transparency of the programme, each participating organization has complete freedom in the choice of a contractor or supplier as well as supervision team of the project. The relevant government agency under which the improvement scheme falls will however be responsible for providing the designs and specifications as well as monitoring compliance with standards. Ganiyu disclosed that this initiative is quite different from the profit-inclined private sector participation (PSP) initiative in such a way that Public Improvement Partnership Programmes (PIIP) creates a means of ensuring sustainable infrastructure and a platform for private sectors to put back to the system through contributing to infrastructural development. The improvement schemes in this initiative covers construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and drainages, construction of pedestrians bridges, installation, rehabilitation and maintenance of street lighting facilities and traffic signals, landscape improvement, provision of drugs and health care facilities, provision of educational facilities and other areas of improvement that may be deemed necessary. Within the shortest period of PIIP initiative many areas within the state have benefitted from the programme. These areas include rehabilitation of Bishop Kale Close, Victoria Island by Starcomms limited, rehabilitation of Okodua/Dillon Street by Kirikiri Residents Association in collaboration with the state government, rehabilitation of Olakunle Bakare street, Victoria Island by Vee Networks Limited, rehabilitation of part of Molade Okoya Thomas street, Victoria Island by Zenith Bank.
