Container Kills Three At Tin Can Island Container Terminal

Container Kills Three At Tin Can Island Container Terminal

Stories by FUNSO OLOJO

Tragedy struck at the Tin Can Island Port at the weekend when a container fell and killed an agent and two motor boys.
Eyewitness account said the incident occurred when a forklift  attempted to lift  a container on a truck inside the Tin Can Island Container Terminal.
In the process, one of the hooks of the forklift snapped and the container fell and killed the agent and the motor boys who were trying to give direction to the forklift driver.
Consequently, business activities were momentarily  paralysed at the terminal as the agents suspended business activities in sympathy with the victims.
Meanwhile, operators have expressed anger at the management of the terminal whom they blamed for the tragic incident.
They claimed that lack of adequate modern equipment and use of obsolete ones by the terminal has become a source of concern and which they said led to the tragic death of the victims.
The angry agents led by Mr Chuks Davis, the Tin Can Chapter chairman of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders(NAGAFF), claimed that the ill-fated forklift was aging and could not lift containers as expected.
Police at the scene of the incident confirmed the tragedy.
Oladipo Bolade Lawrence, Public Relations Officer of ANLCA, Tin Can Island Chapter, while reacting to the incident said: “We have calmed down our people. This is to ensure that the crisis is brought under control.
“But then, we have also insisted that there should be a suspension of all works within the terminal. This is to demonstrate our mark of respect to those who died.
“We are now putting heads together with the TICT management.  But I can assure you, there won't be any problems any more', the agents' spokesman declared.
