Poor Construction Of Drainages Induces Floods - FMEPoor Construction Of Drainages Induces Floods - FMEThe Federal Ministry of Environment says that inadequate construction of drainages were responsible for flooding in some parts of the country. Alhaji Baworu Yahaya, Director, Flood and Erosion in the ministry, made the remark in Abuja in an interview with newsmen. He said the problem of flood in Nigeria was caused by man and natural factors. He said that due to urban development, drainages constructed 10 years ago could no longer stand rapid current human and infrastructural development in urban centres. Yahaya said that in most Nigerian cities, people have cultivated the habit of throwing rubbish and all sorts of waste into the drainage. "Houses have covered most drainage because people build on them, '' he said. The director listed high intensity rainfall of long duration, silted channels, urbanisation, deforestation and climatic change as some of the natural factors that caused flooding. He appealed to Nigerians living in the flood prone areas to clear their drainage to avoid flood water which could cause health problems. In a bid to control the menace of flood, Yayaha said the ministry plans to embark on public awareness and enlightenment campaign to alert the general public on the dangers inherent in flood disaster. He said that the ministry has also developed emergency preparedness plan for monitoring, evaluating and mitigating flood disaster in collaborations with NEMA and other agencies. He said that the ministry would also embark on "physical and biological" measures for flood control management and would also protect right of way for drainage alignment.
